We first told you that Skydance sold the Chris Pratt sci-fi film The Tomorrow War to Amazon Studios for $200M, and now that deal has closed with the streamer setting a July 2 drop date in 240 countries and territories. It’s the second Paramount release that Amazon has picked up after Coming 2 America which was a record-viewed hit for them. That Eddie Murphy title was snapped up by Amazon for $125M, as Deadline first told you. Tomorrow War‘s most recent theatrical release date was July 23. At one point before the pandemic, the movie was scheduled to release at Christmas last year.

In The Tomorrow War, written by Zach Dean, the world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: 30 years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.

“The Tomorrow War will be a global event that will surprise and delight our customers around the world,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “Director Chris McKay has brilliantly crafted this unique, action-packed sci-fi escape that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats and tug on their heart strings with its father-daughter storyline. We couldn’t be happier to continue our relationship with Chris Pratt—who brings such dynamic star power to the film—along with David Ellison and the Skydance team, as we share this exciting film with fans.”

“I’m so proud of this incredible cast and crew who worked under challenging circumstances to create a unique, original sci-fi action movie… something that’s increasingly rare. Watching this team of actors and artisans effortlessly blend action, horror, comedy, and drama was a dream come true for me … and I hope will thrill audiences this summer,” said director Chris McKay.

“It is fantastic to once again partner with Amazon to release another film from the Skydance canon,” said Skydance CEO David Ellison. “Jen and the marketing team have had great success in making film premieres on the Amazon platform must-see events and with Chris Pratt headlining, everything goes up to another level.” [Source]

Taylor Kitsch has been tapped to star opposite Chris Pratt in Amazon’s conspiracy-thriller series The Terminal List, based on Jack Carr’s bestselling novel. Pratt also executive produces the series along with Antoine Fuqua, who directs, and writer David DiGilio (Strange Angel). The Terminal List is a co-production from Amazon Studios and Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television.

Written by DiGilio, who also serves as showrunner, The Terminal List follows James Reece (Pratt) after his entire platoon of Navy SEALs is ambushed during a high-stakes covert mission. Reece returns home to his family with conflicting memories of the event and questions about his culpability. However, as new evidence comes to light, Reece discovers dark forces working against him, endangering not only his life but the lives of those he loves.

Kitsch will play Ben Edwards, a former SEAL and Reece’s best friend. Now a member of CIA Ground Branch, Edwards uses his intelligence access and operator skill set to help Reece seek his vengeance.

Carr also serves as an executive producer along with Pratt and Jon Schumacher through Indivisible Productions, Fuqua through Fuqua Films (The Equalizer, Training Day) and writer Daniel Shattuck. DiGilio will write, showrun and executive produce. [Source]

Amazon Studios has swept in and is poised to land “The Tomorrow War,” a science-fiction action film with Chris Pratt that Skydance developed and produced. The price for the film is rumored to be roughly $200 million, but insiders stress the sale has not been finalized and financial terms have yet to be determined.

The film was being shopped to streamers and drew interest from companies due in part to its star power. Every major service, including Netflix and Apple, viewed the movie. Several were impressed by the film and thought it had commercial potential.

Amazon has been aggressive in landing splashy content, buying the likes of “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Coming 2 America,” and the Michael B. Jordan thriller “Without Remorse” in recent months as the coronavirus pandemic has upended the theatrical landscape. It’s also a sign that Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon Studios, is continuing to push the streamer to back bigger, broader and more mainstream projects and to move away from its time releasing smaller, arthouse features like “Wiener-Dog” and “Patterson.” The company hasn’t abandoned the awards game, however. This year, it is releasing Oscar contenders such as “One Night in Miami” and “Sound of Metal.”

Skydance recently sold its upcoming animated features, “Luck” and “Spellbound” to Apple, which will be part of an overall animation pact. Studios have leaned heavily on streaming services during COVID-19.

“The Tomorrow War” is set in a futuristic conflict, one that finds humanity losing the fight against an alien invasion. To level the playing field, scientists develop a way to draft soldiers from the past to fight the war.

Chris Pratt has boarded the Monarch Media indie comedy The Black Belt which he will produce through his Indivisible Productions label and star.

The Black Belt is a coming-of-age story about a shy, unassuming teen boy on a quest for an expertise in karate, and the unorthodox uncle who guides him along the way. Randall Green wrote the spec script.

Pratt will produce with his producing partner Jon Schumacher, and Monarch Media principals Steve Barnett and Alan Powell. Monarch principal Vicky Patel will serve as EP. UTA Independent Film Group will oversee film sales and distribution.

Green wrote the Netflix feature The Perfect Date, starring Noah Centineo and Laura Marano. Presently, he is adapting Christopher McDougall’s Running with Sherman, also for Netflix, and worked on Warner Brothers’ upcoming Space Jam: A New Legacy. Previously, he was a writer on the hit Showtime series Billions.

Pratt’s Indivisible Productions has a first look deal at Universal. He is currently developing Saigon Bodyguards there, which reunites Pratt with his Avengers collaborators, Joe and Anthony Russo, and Chinese movie star, Wu Jing. Up next on the Indivisible TV slate is The Terminal List, based on the best-selling novel by Jack Carr. Pratt will star and serve as executive producer, and Antoine Fuqua will direct and executive produce. The series is a co-production from Amazon Studios and Civic Center Media in association with MRC Television.
