We first told you that Skydance sold the Chris Pratt sci-fi film The Tomorrow War to Amazon Studios for $200M, and now that deal has closed with the streamer setting a July 2 drop date in 240 countries and territories. Tomorrow War‘s most recent theatrical release date was July 23. At one point before the pandemic, the movie was scheduled to release at Christmas last year.
In The Tomorrow War, written by Zach Dean, the world is stunned when a group of time travelers arrive from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: 30 years in the future mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight. Among those recruited is high school teacher and family man Dan Forester (Pratt). Determined to save the world for his young daughter, Dan teams up with a brilliant scientist (Yvonne Strahovski) and his estranged father (J.K. Simmons) in a desperate quest to rewrite the fate of the planet.
“The Tomorrow War will be a global event that will surprise and delight our customers around the world,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “Director Chris McKay has brilliantly crafted this unique, action-packed sci-fi escape that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats and tug on their heart strings with its father-daughter storyline. We couldn’t be happier to continue our relationship with Chris Pratt—who brings such dynamic star power to the film—along with David Ellison and the Skydance team, as we share this exciting film with fans.”
“I’m so proud of this incredible cast and crew who worked under challenging circumstances to create a unique, original sci-fi action movie… something that’s increasingly rare. Watching this team of actors and artisans effortlessly blend action, horror, comedy, and drama was a dream come true for me … and I hope will thrill audiences this summer,” said director Chris McKay.
“It is fantastic to once again partner with Amazon to release another film from the Skydance canon,” said Skydance CEO David Ellison. “Jen and the marketing team have had great success in making film premieres on the Amazon platform must-see events and with Chris Pratt headlining, everything goes up to another level.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is flush with Chrises, but in its 13 years, it’s been mostly only Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Chris Evans (Captain America) working together as part of the Avengers, while Chris Pratt (Peter Quill) has been leading the Guardians of the Galaxy on their space misadventures. However, since the most ambitious crossover event in history — a.k.a. Avengers: Infinity War – that’s been entirely shaken up: Now, Hemsworth and Pratt are filming Thor: Love and Thunder together in Australia.
Since Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor has been bopping around space more than he’s been on Earth, so it’s only natural that he’s finding a new team with the Guardians of the Galaxy. They first found him stranded in space, grieving the loss of his brother. Immediately, there was friction between Thor and Quill, but they hardly spent any time together before Thor decided to join the team at the end of Avengers: Endgame. The last we saw them, Quill was mourning the loss of Gamora (Zoe Saldana), while Thor was feeling rather aimless.
Now, heading into Thor: Love and Thunder, they’re still together, so fans can count on several Guardians making an appearance in the film before their own Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Set pictures show Hemsworth and Pratt filming together, with Thor in a new Thunderstrike outfit. In a recent interview, Hemsworth revealed just what it’s like working together.
If Quill is intimidated by Thor, it certainly seems to be the other way around in real life: To GQ, Hemsworth said about his co-star, “The guy is wildly impressive with the spontaneity and the humour and the things he comes up with. It’s both funny, inspiring and intimidating.” Ever since they first joined forces, Hemsworth has been effusively praising Pratt.
On-screen, the pair of them have a friendly rivalry over leadership of the Guardians — or Asgardians, depending on who you ask — of the Galaxy. A few months ago, Pratt brought that rivalry into real life when Hemsworth posted a photo of himself working out on Instagram. Pratt commented: “Hey bud. Just heard from my trainer and he needs you to stop working out because since we’re gonna be in the same movie and everything he doesn’t want me to stand next to you if you look like that so I’m gonna need you to put on 25 lbs real quick cool thanks.” Clearly, Thor’s lost some weight since we last saw him, which will probably do nothing to help Quill’s insecurities.
Whatever threat these heroes have to face, fans cans certainly expect more hilarious banter between Thor and Quill when Thor: Love and Thunder releases May 6, 2022.
Today, director Dan Scanlon and producer Kori Rae were recognized with their first Oscar nominations, claiming a slot in the Best Animated Feature category with Disney/Pixar’s Onward.
“We’re so proud of the film, and proud of the cast and crew, and it’s a real honor,” said Scanlon. “It’s so surreal, and early in the morning, so it almost feels like a dream. But it’s pretty great. We’re so happy for the cast and crew that put their all into this film, and shared their personal stories, along with Dan’s and mine,” added Rae. “There was a whole lot of heart from the crew on the film, and I’m just so happy for all of them.”
Drawing inspiration for the film from the loss of his father at a very early age, Scanlon feels the film has resonated, in part, because loss has unfortunately been rampant, in the time of the coronavirus pandemic. “And like Kori mentioned, because we put a lot of our personal stories into this movie, I think that’s why it connects with people,” he said. “I think a lot of people see their own lives in the film, so hopefully it’s a movie that they’re going back to and viewing more than once, and getting something out of every time.”
While Scanlon and Rae were unable to get into specifics regarding future projects, they did note that they have reteamed, in the development of new ideas. “We’re working together again, which is great,” Scanlon said. “I think we’ve learned so much with every film we’ve made together, and we’ll see where it goes.”
The second Disney/Pixar animated feature from Scanlon, following 2013’s Monsters University, Onward centers on Ian (Tom Holland) and Barley Lightfoot (Chris Pratt), elven brothers in search of a magical artifact that will bring their father back to life for a day.
Thus far in awards season, the film has claimed Best Animated Feature nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, along with seven Annie Award noms and other accolades.
In the Oscars’ Animated Feature category, the pic will contend opposite Soul (Disney/Pixar), Wolfwalkers (Apple TV+), Over the Moon (Netflix), and A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon (Netflix/Aardman Animations).
Many Marvel Studios fans are eager to learn something, anything, about James Gunn ‘s return with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is supposed to premiere in theaters sometime in 2023. But with Gunn still working on The Suicide Squad and currently filming the spinoff series Peacemaker for HBO Max, some fans are angsty about when the filmmaker will be finished with his DC Comics commitments and hop back over to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well according to Gunn himself, it doesn’t sound like the wait will be long for his return to his first superhero franchise.
While answering fan questions on social media, as he is wont to do, Gunn confirmed that he will indeed begin filming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 later this year.
A lot of production listings have seemingly revealed the 2021 filming start for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and now Gunn himself has confirmed it. This movie was in the works for years before Gunn was (temporarily) fired from Disney for controversial statements made on his social media accounts, so fans are eager to see what’s next for Marvel’s team of cosmic heroes.
While Gunn initially finished his script long before his firing, it could have gone through some major alterations in the years since. Drax actor Dave Bautista recently said as much during an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “I believe it’s okay to say that we will go into production late next year,” Bautista shared. “I saw a script early on when we were all on schedule and James Gunn was attached before everything went nutso. I believe because [Marvel’s] whole calendar has changed [due to the pandemic shutdown and Guardians’ production delays], that storylines have changed, and they won’t intersect like originally planned. Obviously, we lost Chadwick [Boseman], so I don’t know where that leaves Black Panther. I haven’t seen a new script, is the short answer.”
The production will also get a major update for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by utilizing StageCraft technology. This is the same pioneering tech created for filming Star Wars: The Mandalorian, which should allow Marvel to push the boundaries of their visual effects. We’ll get to see for ourselves when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 premieres sometime in 2023.
